Evil Under the Sun

Burgh Island, South Devon

Burgh Island is located a little way offshore from the estuary of the River Avon on Devon’s coast. The island is connected to the mainland by sand at low tide. The only buildings are a pub and a rather swish hotel, famed for its Art Deco architecture. Agatha Christie stayed here and also used it as the location for one of her Hercule Poirot murder mysteries.

Burgh Island is privately owned. Unauthorised landing and exploring is forbidden. All this may change within the year, however.

    Hi Mark, two points.

First, we have been incredibly lucky in Scotland regarding access. I do hope it is not long before everywhere in the UK enjoys the same.

Second, cracking deck mount shot. Any problems? Any tips?

    :o)

The surfing photo was taken using one of these…

I set my Pentax WR33 to take pics every ten seconds and stuck it to bow of my boat (won’t stick to the deck, too curved). The camera got bashed out of alignment paddling out through the surf, so I had to straighten it roughly with my paddle. A split second after the photo above was taken, the bow hit the base of the wave and the whole camera and sticky pod were instantly ripped off the bow.

    Luckily it was tied on…

About

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote a sea kayaking guide to the South West of England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight. I have used this blog to keep folk updated as to my progress and to reveal some of the wonderful scenery, culture and wildlife of this little corner of England.
