Furzey, Green, Round, Long

Launching near South Haven Point

This morning was spent exploring islands and creeks along the southern side of Poole Harbour. Stiff winds were a bit of a chore on the way out, but the surf back was pretty exhilarating! I was joined on the water by John Gilmour and Heather. Richard Parkin (editor of Paddles Magazine) also tried to join us, but couldn’t find us out on the water … it is a big place!

About 140000 people live in Poole and the Harbour handles large volumes of leisure and commercial shipping, including cross-channel ferries. You wouldn’t know it, where we were.

No…most of them turned out to be full of mud. Even I won’t eat mud in garlic butter…

About this blog

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote 'South West Sea Kayaking', a detailed guide to the coasts and islands of South West England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight.

'Savage Shores: Britain's Coastal Environment' is the working title of the book currently being researched and written by my wife Heather and myself for Pesda Press. The book aims to explain the climate, geology, landforms, natural history and human history of the coastal environment to walkers, sea kayakers and others enjoying this wonderful part of Britain's natural heritage.

This blog is intended to keep you up to date with our progress and adventures in working on the book.
