Harbour Lights

West Bay, Dorset

West Bay harbour in Dorset was the place where nauseating Nick Berry TV drama ‘Harbour Lights’ was filmed. However it has put this atrocity behind it and has seen huge redevelopment in recent years, including a new harbour entrance and breakwater.

We paddled in a (very) leisurely style from West Bay to Lyme Regis, with long stops for Heather to hunt for fossils. We also took in Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. The fact that it’s still April lulled us into a false sense of security and we’re burned to a crisp.

Tomorrow I take 49 school children to Belgium. Back Wednesday night.

Made a similar trip a few years ago. Went to Tyne Cot, Ypres. etc and to the Menin Gate. The numbers of names of the deceased from every corner of the Commonwealth covering every possible surface was staggering and moving. Imagine a Sepoy from India dying in a freezing ditch in Belgium… I’m sure your youngsters benefit greatly, not just in understanding the historical events but something of the awfulness of war.

Keep up the good work Mark, the writing and the teaching. I’m just starting my own modest kayak adventure and I’m finding your activities inspiring. Thanks

About

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote a sea kayaking guide to the South West of England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight. I have used this blog to keep folk updated as to my progress and to reveal some of the wonderful scenery, culture and wildlife of this little corner of England.
