At World’s End

Bishop Rock lighthouse

Heather and I have had a truly fantastic week in and around the Isles of Scilly. Right now we’re waiting for the ferry back to the mainland, so I’ve taken advantage of someone else’s wireless network. Plenty of reports and photos to follow, but for the time being, a single photo can speak a thousand words; yesterday, we went to the edge of the world.

Could you see all the water pouring off the edge?

I’m pretty sure that the water falls off the edge just behind the lighthouse.

What we could see was huge breaking waves on the reefs around Bishop Rock. We bottled out, that photo is as close as we got.

The photo was taken leaning over the deck of Heather’s kayak in a big swell. I took ‘multi-shot’ sequences which banged off five shots at a time. In each sequence of five shots, I only actually got the lighthouse in the frame once or twice (despite it being 175 feet tall) … it had a rather rude habit of moving about. Plus, Heather kept screaming at me about the reef we were drifting right onto. Very distracting.

You really must stop using your SLR in the sea, it will end in tears!

Is that the lighthouse that features in the iconic poster/photo/print of the fella stood by the door and the huge wave wrapping round?

I couldn’t tell you, I’m too highbrow to shop at Athena.

About

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote a sea kayaking guide to the South West of England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight. I have used this blog to keep folk updated as to my progress and to reveal some of the wonderful scenery, culture and wildlife of this little corner of England.
