
After leaving our car with a friend in Penzance (cheers Richard!) we loaded up our kayaks for the ferry journey to the Isles of Scilly.

The three hour sail to Hugh Town on the island of St Mary’s was mainly notable because it was the first time that Heather has taken a ferry anywhere (and we’ve taken a lot) without barfing.
We reassembled our gear on the beach beside Hugh Town quay and launched for an evening paddle, all of 5 km north to the campsite on the island of St Martin’s.


St Martin’s is covered in colourful flower gardens; the Scilly flower industry produces blooms for the UK market right through the winter, on account of the mild gulf stream-influenced climate. The best things about St Martin’s however, are the bakery and the Seven Stones pub.
As we sat in our tent that night, we listened to the Coastguard’s Maritime Safety Broadcast on VHF, which forecasted Force 9 winds for the following morning. We weren’t too worried, being in a quality tent surrounded by three metre high hedges …
