In recent years, there has been an explosion in the popularity of kayak fishing in the UK, making it possibly the largest growth area of paddlesport. Most kayak anglers use specially designed sit-on-tops, as depicted. Beyond those facts, the sport of fishing is frankly a mystery to me, a situation I’d like to rectify. I have been known to attempt a bit of fishing from kayaks myself, albeit with zero success; partly due to my general ineptitude, partly because long expedition kayaks like mine aren’t exactly brilliant platforms for catching and landing reluctant and peeved fish.
The photo below depicts Heather in British Columbia a few years ago, showing how it is done. I really must get her to teach me the knack of this fishing business …

A nice article there. I use an RTM disco for my kayak fishing, it does the job well as I tend to travel along way in search of fishing marks, however I would like a more stable platform for some conditions. Anyway keep trying and best of luck to you.
Read this: http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=75756 sounds like he had fun……same fella do you think?

Hi mark,
A freind phoned me today and told me my pic was on this site ( fisherman at lulworth ) and yes its me.
kayak fishing has been the best form of fishing i have tried, the day after lulworth i fished the solent and had approx 30 bream, 1 x silver eel and a 6lb smooth hound all returned to fight another day.
Maybe when you have more time ill take you out on the fishing yak and show you the fun you can have.
Good luck with your journey and ill look forward to your progress

Hi Dave – I may well take you up on your offer, once I’m back in Purbeck this autumn.
Cheers!
Mark
I stumbled upon this post by accident. I know it’s old, but I wanted to tell you I paddle a Tiderace Xcite & NDK Explorer, and I use a handline and a jig to catch fish when we stop. It’s a load of fun, requires almost no skill, and works well. You should give it a go!
No need for downgrading your kayak to a sit-on-top to catch fish
Here’s a link for the handline I use:

And a link to a picture of me fishing from a sea kayak in the salt:

Paddle out to a rocky point with depths 30-60ft, drop the jig to the bottom, keep the line strait as you pull it up an arms length, then drop it down, repeat…..pull in fish.
PS- Your pics are beautiful, and the books look great!
