Groundhog Day

Purbeck sunset, Saturday evening

Another weekend spent at home in Purbeck with the wind ripping along. Indeed, it has barely stopped blowing since last weekend, and looks set to continue.

A few of us went for a paddle around Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour today, but it was a bit of a grind and I’m fairly sure that we made more progress backwards than forwards.

The endless wind has kept me ashore on quite a few occasions lately, making me rather worried that I’m not going to be very fit for Scotland when I set off for my Very Big Trip in three weeks’ time. On the bright side though, I’ve spent most of the weekend (and previous weeks) MTBing, so at least I might be halfway fit for Something Big that I’m trying next weekend.

Amazing picture – you feel like you are standing on the shoreline just looking at it! Your big trip sounds very ambitious. I never have done sea kayaking but follow many blogs about it. Some day it will happen.

Good luck with the MTB – SDW should be a good route to do! I’m just dusting off my MTB as I’m down your way with group of sudents on DofE Final Expedition in the Purbecks Fri/Sat. Thought I might use the MTB to nip between checkpoints!

The SDW was great fun, in a masochistic sort of way – 101 miles and 4000m of ascent with a couple of rough bivvys along the trail. I’ve done it before, but the bad weather made it rather more gruelling this time …

    Cheers,

    Mark

Glad to hear it was fun! We struck gold for DofE with 2 lovely days and the wind and wet hitting Fri night once kids had pitched camp.

Had a ball MTB around the area – lovely. Just very difficult to be on the ridge up from Old Harry Rocks and seeing the sea so close yet no Sea Kayak :-(

About this blog

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote 'South West Sea Kayaking', a detailed guide to the coasts and islands of South West England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight.

'Savage Shores: Britain's Coastal Environment' is the working title of the book currently being researched and written by my wife Heather and myself for Pesda Press. The book aims to explain the climate, geology, landforms, natural history and human history of the coastal environment to walkers, sea kayakers and others enjoying this wonderful part of Britain's natural heritage.

This blog is intended to keep you up to date with our progress and adventures in working on the book.
