Nearly but not quite

After 19 paddling days and about 450 miles covered, I’m now camped within sight of Cape Wrath – splendid! Most importantly, I’m still having fun and managing to endure my own company. However I have to take a little time out to call in at work before I resume paddling; so here I am back at home for the day.

If I make it around the Cape, I’ll certainly aim to paddle along the north coast of Scotland, but then have to make some tricky decisions based on the weather and remaining time available – do I then head north or south?

Updates still HERE.

A pleasure to meet you at Big Sand, by Gairloch. Didn’t know you was famous, but saw your picture in a canoeing magazine in Gairloch so decided to say hi. Turns out Great Skuas are tremendously pesky and I confussed them with the Arctic ones. Keep fighting ‘em off and good luck with your travels.

Hope you managed the last leg Mark – looking forward to hearing all about it. I haven’t been looking at the forecast that far North but you haven’t been missing anything in Dorset!

Hi Grahame – it was a pleasure to meet you. I did indeed see skuas stealing catches from other sea birds. Evil things.

About this blog

During 2006-8 I researched, photographed and wrote 'South West Sea Kayaking', a detailed guide to the coasts and islands of South West England; from the Bristol Channel to the Isle of Wight.

'Savage Shores: Britain's Coastal Environment' is the working title of the book currently being researched and written by my wife Heather and myself for Pesda Press. The book aims to explain the climate, geology, landforms, natural history and human history of the coastal environment to walkers, sea kayakers and others enjoying this wonderful part of Britain's natural heritage.

This blog is intended to keep you up to date with our progress and adventures in working on the book.
