Avocets   2 comments

A cold raw grey day in Purbeck today, with some fresh snowfall. We headed out to try and locate the 800+ avocets who are currently putting in a guest appearance in a quiet corner of Poole Harbour…

Canoe Kayak UK   Leave a comment

My photo article on the Shetland Isles (above is an uncorrected rough draft) is still available in Canoe Kayak UK magazine; on the newsagents’ shelves for another two weeks or so. I’ve also just seen a preview of next month’s issue – they’ve used one of my photos as the cover, splendid!

Please rush out and buy these magazine issues, so that I get paid and hence can make a down-payment on my planned Bond-Villain-style hideaway (either a mountain-top germ laboratory or a dormant volcano-cum-space base, I haven’t decided yet). Or it might just help me pay for a replacement lens for the one I dropped in the River Dart.

All good.

…but that doesn’t stop me dreaming of other places.

This is by far and away the most expensive photo I’ve ever taken. Whilst I was photographing my friend Steve on the River Dart yesterday, my waterproof camera bag (which was unsealed) rolled off a rock and into the river. Inside was my lovely Nikon 80-200 f2.8 lens (if you don’t understand the nerdy nomenclature, just understand that this is a very nice and very un-cheap toy), which is now not looking too happy or healthy.

No sea paddling in recent weeks, but hopefully I’ll get out soon. Today has excitingly been spent making notes on the tides of Sussex, part of ongoing work for Pesda Press for the proposed SE England guidebook. Oh well, below are a few randomly selected photos from our summer trip to Shetland, taken with said soggy lens…

The December issue of Canoe Kayak UK magazine has a photo-feature about our fantastic trip to Shetland, last summer. Hope it’s of  interest.

There are also some pics of our trip here

Holm sweet Holm   2 comments

This weekend saw a quick dash across the powerful tides of the Bristol Channel to visit Flat  Holm island. Flat Holm has the distinction of being the only part of Wales included in my guidebook South West Sea Kayaking. Flat Holm is actually part of Cardiff, officially.

The wardens of Flat Holm were as welcoming as ever, and the weather didn’t always feel like late October … although you might notice that I didn’t take any pics on the whilst out on the water making  the crossings, make of  that what you will!
