I think Montgomery and Mountbatten were also present at Fort Henry that day; a concentration of Top Brass unheard of during the war, as one lucky bomb could have beheaded the Allied efforts in the West... The sunk Valentines are still a popular target for sub-aqua groups, and a Sherman in equivalent amphibious form (ie deployable canvas skirts housing floatation bladders) is on display at the nearby Bovington Tank Museum. Unsurprisingly, they were not a great success in the lumpy conditions at Normandy on D-Day, either, and were one of the less celebrated "funnies". Given the prefix "DD" for Duplex Drive, these creations were known in the Forces as "Donald Ducks" (rhyming slang coincidental...?) and had a prop and tiller for steering.

Hi Jack - that's a great trip, but (as I'm sure you're aware) entirely dependent upon the vagaries of the Easter weather. Drop me an email and let me know what you specifically need to know (markATukriversguidebookDOTcoDOTuk) or better still, post here - http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=4 - I'll respond in the public domain and you'll also encounter a wealth of experience that far surpasses mine!

best wishes,
