‘Savage Shores: Britain’s Coastal Environment’ is the working title of a book currently being researched and written by Heather and Mark Rainsley for Pesda Press. The book aims to explain the climate, geology, landforms, natural history and human history of the coastal environment to walkers, sea kayakers and others enjoying this wonderful part of Britain’s natural heritage.
The two authors are experienced writers and photographers with a particular love for the coast of Britain. We intend to use this blog to keep folk updated as to our progress with the book over the next 18 months.

Hi guys,
I just found your site, love it! Sounds like you have had some brilliant adventures.
I am interested in getting into sea kayaking as I now live in the village of Beer (happy days!) in East Devon. The book you are working on sounds interesting so – good luck!
I am off out now to buy a book called “South West Sea Kayaking” by some bloke, can’t remember his name!
If you are ever in Beer and fancy an espresso or somewhere to stay pop up to the Youth Hostel (I am the manager there) and I am sure we can barter, information and tales of adventure on the high seas for a spot of dinner or a room for the night!!
Cheers
Jon
I had a very interesting time Kayaking from Beer!
Launching was easy, but landing at high-tide in shore-dumping 3′ surf was very sketchy. Those steep pebbles just slide down when you tread on them, so I was still in the surf zone when the second / third / fourth waves landed on me – filling the kayak and making it heavy.
Managed eventually, but suggest that when there’s a swell it’s better to time it to land when the sea is a little further out and the beach sloping rather less steeply.
Loved doing the Beer ‘Nightrunner’ you have some excellent coastpaths, and it’s a great event.
Regards,
Dan.
